Underfloor heating and heat pumps
Underfloor heating and heat pumps go well together. Because the whole floor is the emitter, a wet underfloor system can run at the lower water temperatures a heat pump is designed for.
Why the two suit each other
A radiator has a small surface area, so it needs hot water to heat a room. A heated floor has a huge surface area, so it can warm the same room with much cooler water. Heat pumps are most efficient when they do not have to push the water temperature up, so a wet underfloor system, designed with the right pipe spacing for the heat loss of each room, is a good match.
What we do
We design and install the underfloor heating. That is the pipe layout, the manifolds and the floor level controls, set up to work at lower flow temperatures. The heat pump itself, and the parts of the system it needs, is installed by your heat pump installer. We are happy to coordinate with them so the two halves work together.
Talk to us early
If a heat pump is part of the project, now or later, it is worth getting the underfloor heating designed with that in mind from the start. Pipe spacing, floor coverings and zoning all matter more when the system is running cooler.
Tell us about the property, the floors and whether the heat pump is confirmed, and we will talk you through the underfloor side.
What we plan for when a heat pump is involved
- The flow temperature the heat pump is designed to run at
- Pipe spacing in each room, so the floor can give out enough heat at that temperature
- The floor finish in each room, because some finishes let heat through more easily than others
- How the rooms are zoned and controlled
- The point where the underfloor circuits connect to the heat pump installer work
Whether your heat pump is an air source or a ground source system, the underfloor side is planned in the same way. The earlier we are involved, the easier it is to get the two halves right.
Heat pump questions
Does underfloor heating work with a heat pump?
Yes. Underfloor heating spreads warmth across the whole floor, so it can run at the lower water temperatures a heat pump works best at. We design and install the underfloor side of the system and work alongside your heat pump installer. Talk to us early, because the two need to be planned together.
Do you install the heat pump as well?
We design and install the underfloor heating. The heat pump itself is installed by your heat pump installer, and we are happy to work alongside them so the two halves work together.
